These are my thoughts and guides in written form.
Beginner Guides
Getting started in martial arts can raise some interesting questions that go beyond learning techniques or choosing a discipline. In this section, I’ll explore martial arts through the perspectives of psychology and philosophy, drawing on different schools of thought to examine how people approach learning, competition, personal development, and the challenges of training. I’m particularly interested in how ideas from these fields overlap with martial arts, and how they might offer different ways of understanding the experience of being a beginner. I’ll also explore the different motivations, personalities, and perspectives that people bring to martial arts, with the goal of making these ideas accessible to those who are just getting started.
Technique Breakdowns
Martial arts techniques offer an opportunity to explore the relationship between physical movement, psychology, and different approaches to problem-solving. In this section, I’ll examine techniques and concepts from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA, with an emphasis on the ideas and principles behind them. I’m particularly interested in how different schools of thought in psychology and philosophy can help us understand different approaches, creativity, and adaptability in martial arts. I’ll also explore how individual differences, learning styles, and personal experiences influence the ways practitioners understand and apply techniques, and why different approaches can be effective for different people.
Philosophical/Psychological Topics In Martials Arts
Martial arts have long been connected to questions about human behavior, identity, discipline, and the nature of personal development. In this section, I’ll explore the relationship between martial arts, psychology, and philosophy, drawing on different schools of thought to examine how these fields intersect. I’m particularly interested in questions surrounding personality, motivation, resilience, meaning, and the ways people understand themselves through martial arts. I’ll also consider how philosophical traditions (existentialism, nihilism, etc) and psychological theories (Behaviorists, Freudians) offer different perspectives on competition, self-improvement, aging, and lifelong participation.
